About Me

I've worked as a consultant and software developer in the financial industry for over 10 years. I've worked for three of the top five Canadian banks in both retail banking and capital markets. I'm currently working with a small consulting firm in downtown Toronto.

The future of self service banking

Designing user up, rather than components down. That's the vision behind the new generation of automated teller machines being installed throughout Spain. For decades ATMs have focused on a few very specific transactions, but ATMs being created by a company called IDEO are completely user focused and re-think the way the machines interact with people.

How long before Canada gets these?

I think it may be some time (years, not decades) before we see a new breed of ATM's in Canada. The trend in technology is quickly moving towards user-based interaction design. However, it's no secret that Canadian banks are slow to respond to change. They will certainly observe the reaction and do a cost vs return study.

I think once the reward (*cough* profits) outweighs the cost, then we'll start seeing some of that innovation here. The first bank that does take the leap, will certainly be rewarded and attract market share; the rest of the banks will surely follow close behind.

All in all, the new design looks pretty sleek and appealing. I'd be first in line to try the new ATM experience, even if I have to pay a transaction fee for using the competitions ATM. =)

Don't hold your breath, we'll see these around the same time we see an affordable iPhone data plan. I hope I'm wrong though, 'cause they sure are pretty!
